Many youth who were planning to take poultry to the fair were disappointed after finding out about the ban. Ribbons were hung on the posters of the winning fowl. The photos were placed on a poster board and viewed by the judge. At the fair, each exhibitor had photos of their birds, three views in all, that would be pertinent for judging. While attending the Derry Township Agricultural Fair in Westmorland County, Romesberg was inspired by a creative idea for the poultry exhibits. “We are hopeful to be able to hold an alternative competition for poultry exhibitors, if we can still work it out by fair time.” “The ban on live poultry will affect about 35 to 40 exhibitors that would have brought approximately 100 poultry exhibits to this year's fair," fair board President Jeff Romesberg said. Plans are being made to have an alternative exhibit for poultry exhibitors, so they can still participate in the fair. This means that when visiting the Somerset County Fair this year there will be no chickens, ducks or geese in the poultry/rabbit barn. In fact, no highly pathogenic bird flu viruses have been detected in the state since the 1983-84 outbreaks, which claimed 17 million birds worth $65 million, according to the Department of Agriculture. No known cases of the H5N2 strain have been found in Pennsylvania during the recent outbreak. This was done as a preventive measure to reduce the risk of the avian influenza, or bird flu, being spread to Pennsylvania. In May, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding announced a suspension of all live poultry competitions at state-approved agricultural fairs and the 2016 Pennsylvania Farm Show.
